Circular Economy
What is the Circular Economy?
In general, the circular economy model of production and consumption is based on extending the life of products as much as possible, rather than using them only once. This can be done by borrowing instead of buying, and by giving products a "second chance" by repairing, refurbishing or even reselling them. When a product reaches the end of its life cycle, the materials can be recycled. This reduces the amount of waste, and the reuse of raw materials and finished products also creates economic value.
In contrast, the traditional linear economic model assumes a one-off consumption. This is not sustainable in the current environmental, economic and social context.
Why is Circular Economy important?
Resources are becoming increasingly scarce as the population grows and with it the demand for raw materials. Many raw materials are not produced locally by users, leaving businesses vulnerable and further polluting the environment by transporting raw materials to processing sites. Among many other things, more efficient use of raw materials can also reduce carbon emissions.
In the wood and furniture sector, sustainability and the transition to a circular economy are particularly important and, unlike in other sectors, can be easily achieved with attention and commitment - and the WOODCircle project's learning material will provide effective support.
What are the benefits of the Circular Economy?
Waste reduction, eco-design and reuse can save businesses a lot of money, not to mention reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help lower the CO2 levels in the environment.
